Chris’ Story:
I had been using this church Dating App called Mutual for a few years and while I would frequently get matches, nothing would stick. At 32 years old, I was honestly on the verge of giving up lol when I decided to give the app one last 6-month stretch. I also decided to open up my search preferences to be worldwide, instead of just in and around California.
I struck gold when I matched with Andrea Barrón from Saltillo, Mexico, in early February and I sent my first message to her on February 8th, 2023. We hit it off immediately. And in one of our earliest phone conversations, she revealed that she had only been using the Mutual app for a couple of weeks… figures :D
While both of us have had past relationships end in very similarly painful ways, Andy and I felt our Heavenly Father working his magic between us. We still feel today that our meeting and our relationship has very much been guided by Him. After moving our chat to WhatsApp and many, many phone conversations, I decided to fly out to Mexico to meet Andy and her family, who are also faithful members of our church. The trip was amazing and so was her family. On the Sabbath, we had the opportunity to go church together for the first time and that day left such a huge impact... seeing Andy in her Sunday best, watching her serve and care for the members of her ward, and being able to feel the Spirit alongside her was deeply moving and something I will never forget. I knew I was going to marry her.
But the long-distance relationship did not make any of this easy. As a filmmaker, I was in the process of juggling three feature length movies in various stages and I knew I still had to:
A. Ask her parents' permission and
B. Figure out a memorable time and place to propose.
For the permission, two big obstacles were; getting in front of her parents without her around, and also... speaking Spanish lol
Andy's family speaks little English, so I knew that this white-boy Nebraskan-native would have to step it up to get the job done haha So I had a local church friend translate a letter that I had written into Spanish for me. And when I returned to Mexico for the second time, I had my moment with Andy's parents... the only problem was, Andy was in the room too lol
I felt a strong prompting in the moment telling me, "It's OKAY. She needs to be here..." And so, I pulled out the letter and began reading. After I finished (and while everyone was clearly in shock) Andy tearfully translated her parents' responses to me. The responses were touching and, thankfully, full of support and happiness for us both.
I would not have been able to receive these blessings had I not listened to that sweet Spiritual prompting and I am so grateful for that.
So, the jig was up! Andy knew I was going to propose, she just didn't know when or where. And so, for the next month, I prepared (whilst still juggling several movie projects) to create something to show my devotion to Andy in the only way I knew how... through movies.
Andy and I both love the movies and I think it was only fitting that our proposal take place in the theater, in front of friends and family. She had no idea, but she was comforted and surprised that I had also secretly got her dad in on it (as my hologram "Nick Fury") lol
It was an incredible and unforgettable night. I'll let the video do all the talking from here ;) Sorry the site won’t me post a clickable link – but you can copy and paste the link below to see our proposal:
Andy's Story:
After around eight months of feeling sad, hopeless, and with no motivation, I decided to give a dating app (Mutual) a chance. I didn't know if it was going to work. I just wanted a way to escape from those feelings and be able to feel hope once again...hopefully fall in love again and feel happy again...
After a few weeks I matched with this cute stranger, Chris Lofing. I wasn't sure where this story was going to go and how long it was going to last but we kept talking and the more I knew him the more I liked him. After the first video he sent me in his Sunday church clothes I was so excited to keep getting to know him. He looked so attractive! We found in each other a good friend to laugh with, and next thing I knew, his stepdad is a travel agent and he might come to Mexico. He came and met me and my family.
Christopher was nice, kind, confident, polite, respectful, fun, mature and more than I had expected. We became a couple one day before he left Mexico!
Next Trip he came to visit he surprisingly asked my parents for my hand in Marriage. I will never forget that moment and the sweet letter he wrote and read to my parents. I knew I still needed to pray and consult with God, but even in my shock, I knew I wanted to marry him.
Next trip I visited him and he proposed in front of his friends and family in a very creative, sweet and meaningful way. I will never forget that. By the time he proposed I had already received an answer from God, so all that was left was saying "YES!!"
Our story has been a miracle. I feel like things just seemed and felt right. Everything has been working for our good, and I have no doubt that Heavenly Father has been watching over us, helping us, strengthening us and showing us His love.
After meeting Christopher Lofing I got back my motivation, my willpower, my hope and the love and happiness I was needing. All that I felt I had lost, was given back from God,through him. God is a good and loving Father, and if we're patient he always gives us what we need.
I love you more than anything Christopher <3
